Wood,
Gas (LP or Natural), or Gas Inserts
There have
been a lot of technological advancements in fireplaces, since
the traditional wood burning models. But many people still prefer
the look, smell and charm of an old fashioned wood burning fireplace.
Gas burning
fireplaces can be fueled by either LP or Natural Gas and do
not require a vertical chimney so they can be installed just
about anywhere. They also offer greater fuel and heat efficiency,
better air quality, and burn longer.
Gas inserts
act like a gas fireplace and are put into existing open-hearth
wood burning fireplaces. An insert has a fixed glass front
which keeps heated air from escaping up your chimney.

Selecting
A Room
One of the first things to decide is which room in your home
youd like your new fireplace to go. It used to be that
a fireplace only went in the family or living rooms. With newer
technological advancements, fireplaces can now be found in bathrooms,
bedrooms, studies, kitchens, and even mobile homes.
|
| |

Space
Next, you need to look at elements like the physical size of
the room youve chosen and where exactly in that room youd
prefer the fireplace to go. Be sure you measure the size of
the space you select. Remember to also consider the climate
you're in and the type of insulation you have in your home when
deciding on the heat output (BTUs) you want from your fireplace.

Decorating
Style
A fireplace can be the greatest complement to your interior
design, from traditional to contemporary. You can select options
like grills, trims, glass, cabinets and more to create your
own customized style.

Venting Type: Direct Vent
Installing a fireplace used to require a chimney, but with the
newer Direct Vent gas models, a vertical chimney is no longer
needed. Direct Vent fireplaces have sealed glass fronts and
vent air through either the top or the side of the fireplace.
They work by using the air from outside your home to fuel the
fire and prevent it from using the warm air inside your home.
So, they still warm your home while preventing combustible gasses
from entering your home.

Heating Type: Radiant Versus Heat Circulating
Traditional open-hearth wood burning fireplaces provide a small
amount of radiant heat. A small amount of heat is felt in front
of the fireplace, but most of the heat in this type of fireplace
escapes up the chimney.
Newer
wood burning and all gas fireplaces circulate heat through
a heat exchange system that takes in cool air from the room,
heats it from the firebox and then blows the warm air into
the home. Many models even offer wall unit or remote controlled
temperature settings. Either option provides electricity-free
heat.
